Words That Boost Your Endeavours. A Mindset Business Owners Display

Marcus Clifford: A Mindset Business Owners Display

Entrepreneurs who own businesses are clearly the unsung heroes of our economy. However, with the amount of stuff our government is piling on and the battles over market issues, it is easy to feel besieged, unloved, and put upon. I recently met my local farmer, Leon, who was similarly feeling unloved and put upon.

Business owners are very determined, if not fatigued. They display determination and a positive attitude, even though they can feel anything but. They can learn from failure and tolerate the pain that comes with ownership.

Running a business requires mental and emotional resilience akin to that of elite soldiers, like those in the SAS. I often write about Business as a battle, partly because the markets I have occupied have felt like battlegrounds, but tackling things today clearly requires the mindset of an elite soldier.

The SAS selection process is a gruelling journey that tests candidates physically, mentally, and emotionally. Also, a bit like starting a business from scratch. Watching Rogue Heroes recently, I reflected on the spirit and culture of the SAS, an ethos built on camaraderie, innovation, and perseverance. Years ago, I participated in the “Fan Dance,” one of the SAS’s iconic challenges, under the guidance of ex-SAS personnel. The experience was humbling, surrounded by soldiers whose shared mission fostered an extraordinary sense of unity.

This spirit resonates deeply with me. At a World Wildlife Fund event, I found myself seated with former SAS soldiers, paratroopers, and engineers. Their camaraderie and trust were palpable, even in a formal setting. That evening reminded me of a key lesson: culture, values, and mindset are the glue that binds exceptional teams together—whether in business or on the battlefield. The evening also took an unexpected turn, ending in a lively scene reminiscent of the Wild West, with ex-SAS members at the centre of the action. It was an unforgettable experience that further underscored their unshakeable bonds and zest for life.

The SAS’s ethos is beautifully captured on their Hereford memorial, which quotes the words from James Elroy Flecker’s poem, ‘The Golden Road to Samarkand.’

“We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go Always a little further; it may be Beyond that last blue mountain barred with snow Across that angry or that glimmering sea.”

This verse has served as a guiding mantra for me in challenging times, inspiring resilience, and hope. When two of my children set off to travel the globe, I had these words engraved on a metal business card for them, accompanied by a note on how these lines had supported me in my darkest hours. I hoped they might offer my children the same solace and strength as they venture into the unknown.

The SAS thrives on building a culture where trust, adaptability, and shared purpose are paramount. This principle holds true in business. As Tom Peters famously said: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” While strategy is vital, its success hinges on an organisation’s ability to foster a supportive, innovative culture.

Every business has its own unique culture, shaped by behaviours, beliefs, and mindsets that define “the way we do things around here.” A thriving culture creates emotional connections with customers, establishes trust, and inspires teams to perform beyond expectations. In elite teams like the SAS, trust is not just an asset; it is the foundation of success. Similarly, in business, a culture of trust amplifies resilience and drives performance.

Business owners know that chaos is inevitable. Markets shift, challenges arise, and unforeseen disruptions can threaten stability. As chaos theory suggests, “The present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future.” Success lies in embracing uncertainty, adapting with agility, and turning obstacles into opportunities.

Resilience becomes the entrepreneur’s superpower. It is the grit to keep pushing forward and the creativity to pivot when necessary. For business leaders, resilience transforms roadblocks into breakthroughs and setbacks into stepping stones for innovation.

In today’s competitive market, standing out requires boldness. Small and midsized businesses often fight harder to differentiate themselves and playing it safe is rarely a winning strategy. Leaders who take calculated risks and make unconventional choices often rise above the noise.

Navigating today’s complexities requires more than perseverance; it can call for a guide who understands the terrain. As a business consultant and coach with deep expertise in the print sector, I bring tools and workshops tailored to help you tap into your greatest strengths. Together, we can:

The SAS motto, “Who Dares Wins,” serves as a powerful reminder that success favours the bold. Let us work together to harness that daring spirit and drive your business toward extraordinary achievements.
