A beginner’s guide to LED installation

by Firstlite’s technical team

So, you’ve got your shiny new LED modules from Firstlite, and you’re ready to light up your signage. But where do you start?

A beginner’s guide to LED installation

If you’re new to LED installation, don’t worry, this guide will take you through the process step by step, making it simple and straightforward. No jargon, no headaches, just good lighting. Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Gather your tools

Before you get started, you’ll need a few basic tools. Here’s what you should have on hand:

  • Wire strippers
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws
  • Cable & connectors

With these essentials, you’ll be ready to go.

Step 2: Understand your installation drawing

Every order from Firstlite comes with a handy installation drawing. Think of it as your roadmap; it tells you exactly where to place each LED module for the best light output. Take a minute to review it before you start.

Step 3: Mark your row spacings

Using the installation drawing as a guide, mark where your LED rows will go. If you’re working with built-up letters or an illuminated box, pay attention to:

  • Return depth
  • Stroke width
  • Face material

These factors will help you position your modules correctly for even lighting.

Step 4: Mounting the LED modules

Now for the fun part – sticking your LEDs into place. Follow these steps:

  1. Clean the inside of your sign to remove any debris (trust us, dust and dirt don’t mix well with adhesives).
  2. Peel the backing off the LED modules and stick them in place.
  3. If you want extra security, you can also use pan head screws to fasten them down.

Step 5: Wiring it up

There are two ways to connect your LEDs to a power supply: series wiring and parallel wiring. Each has its pros and cons, so let’s break it down.

Series wiring

This method connects all LED modules in a single circuit, sharing the same positive (+) and negative (-) feed from the driver. It works well as long as you follow supplier guidelines on the maximum number of modules per string. If you exceed this, you risk voltage drop, meaning the last module in the chain may be dimmer than the first.

Parallel wiring

If you want to avoid voltage drop, go for parallel wiring. This setup ensures each string of modules gets its own positive (+) and negative (-) feed from the driver. The big advantage? If one string fails, the rest keep shining bright.

Step 6: Final checks and powering up

Before flipping the switch, do a quick check:

  • Are all modules securely in place?
  • Are the connections tight and correct?
  • Is there any exposed wiring that needs to be covered?

Once you’re confident everything’s good to go, power it up and bask in the glow of your perfectly installed LEDs.

Bonus tip: Use the right connectors

To keep your wiring secure and safe, Firstlite offers high-quality connectors designed for moisture resistance and flame retardancy. Using the right accessories can make all the difference in the longevity of your installation.
